Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (12 August 1892 – 27 September 1972) was a renowned Indian librarian, mathematician, and is considered the father of Library Science in India. His pioneering work laid the foundation for Library and Information Science in India and gained international recognition. Dr. S. R. Ranganathan began his career in librarianship as the University Librarian at the University of Madras in 1923, where he introduced transformative reforms in the field. In 1929, he launched India’s first formal library science course at the same university, laying the foundation for LIS education in the country. He was instrumental in advocating for public library development, contributing significantly to the enactment of the Madras Public Libraries Act in 1948.
