Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (12 August 1892 – 27 September 1972) was a renowned Indian librarian, mathematician, and is considered the father of Library Science in India. His pioneering work laid the foundation for Library and Information Science in India and gained international recognition. Dr. S. R. Ranganathan began his career in librarianship as the University Librarian at the University of Madras in 1923, where he introduced transformative reforms in the field. In 1929, he launched India’s first formal library science course at the same university, laying the foundation for LIS education in the country. He was instrumental in advocating for public library development, contributing significantly to the enactment of the Madras Public Libraries Act in 1948.

Introduction

To portray the status of higher education in the country, Ministry of Education has endeavoured to conduct an annual web-based All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) since 2010-11. The survey covers all the Institutions in the country engaged in imparting of higher education. Data is being collected on several parameters such as teachers, student enrolment, programmes, examination results, education finance, infrastructure.

Indicators of educational development such as Institution Density, Gross Enrolment Ratio, Pupil-teacher ratio, Gender Parity Index, Per Student Expenditure will also be calculated from the data collected through AISHE. These are useful in making informed policy decisions and research for development of education sector.

Permitted Usage

Authorized Users from ONOS member institutions may access or use the Licensed Materials subscribed as per the the following agreed terms:

1. Search, retrieve, display and view the Licensed Materials Electronically.
2. Download a digital copy, digitally save, digitally copy, and print a reasonable por-tion of the Licensed Materials. Licensee may charge a reasonable fee to recover costs of copying or printing portions of Licensed Materials for Authorized Users and such fees shall not constitute commercial use.
3. Provide single printed or electronic copies of single articles at the request of indi-vidual Authorized Users or a third party colleague for personal, scholarly, educa-tional, scientific, or research uses (scholarly sharing).
4. Incorporate parts of the Licensed Materials in printed or electronic form in as-signments and portfolios, theses and in dissertations which may include extraction and manipulation for the purpose of illustration, explanation, example, comment, criticism, teaching, research, and analysis with proper attribution to the publisher.
5. For scholarly citation, with appropriate credit, figures, tables, and brief excerpts with proper attribution to the publisher.

Restrictions

The Institution and Authorized Users are not allowed the following during the agreement as well as after termination of the agreement.

1. Commercial Use: sell or resell the Licensed Materials unless the Licensor has given the Licensee or an Authorized User permission in writing to do so. For the avoidance of doubt, research conducted by Licensee and Authorized Users that is supported by a commercial entity shall not be considered use for commercial purposes.
2. Remove Copyright Notice: remove, obscure or alter copyright notices, acknowledgements or other means of identification or disclaimers included in the Licensed Materials.
3. Modification of Licensed Materials: alter or adapt the Licensed Materials, except to the extent necessary to make it perceptible on a computer screen.
4. Display on Network: display or distribute any part of the Licensed Materials on any electronic network (including the internet) other than by a Secure Network.
5. Access to Unauthorized Users: knowingly or intentionally provide access and/or allow use of the Licensed Materials by anyone other than Authorized Users.
